Hey Dale, nice job. Who made the mandolin used in that video and what strings do you use?

thanks for watching, it is a Collings mando and I'm using Tomastik Infeld strings, i think my spelling is wrong but close. They are flatwound, very different, people seem to love em or hate em, put me in the 1st category.

all the best,

scrubber & maplebaby

(being fairly new to the mandolin) What are the advantages/disadvantages to flat wounds on the mandolin? I've experimented with quite a few name brands of round wounds and so far am liking the Elixers with the nanoweb coating (11 to 40 med) but am always open minded to new ideas. I was using D'Addario med but couldn't seem to get more than 10 or 12 hours play life out of them.

Dale, that a mighty fine job of pickin' there.

I'm curious to know how you made that (and other) videos. Are you using the camcorder's built in mic? Do you have a pickup in your mandolin? Can you give us an equipment rundown?

Also what pick are you using in this video? I hear a lot of pick noise and I'm trying to figure out how much is attributable to the recording process and how much to the pick.

Thanks.

Mandolin is my 'second' instrument, so I can't really claim any authority here. :? As I said earlier, I like them. They feel comfortable under my left hand and and the sound they produce is pleasing to me.

I can't address the issue of playing hours -- I've had the same strings on my three mandolins for over a year now, and probably won't change them anytime soon! (Then again, I probably only play any one of them a few minutes a month...).

They are kind of expensive, so I wouldn't recommend trying them if you are already pleased with the strings you have (Don't fix it if it ain't broke  ).

like scrubber i don't really consider myself a mandolin player - it is my second instrument of only a few years so take what i say in that context. I personally don't know of any disadvantages to flat wounds unless you don't care for the tone. I happen to like them on some electric guitars as well. Luther Perkins (Mr. Cash's guitar player) used flat wounds on all his guitars and I kinda like the tone he had. Elixers with nanoweb IMO are an improvement and good strings, the TI are a whole different thing however and like scrubber said they are on the pricey side, but hey this ain't rehersal it's the game, go for a set and see what you think. Enough of my yackin!

all my videos are made with the recorders, or my older ones, cameras internal mic. Pretty weak i know but I just don't put my time into that like some folks do and they get a real nice result. I just shoot them for what they are and leave it at that. i do not have a PU in my mando, it is a Collings A with a varnish finish, far better than i deserve. Great mando. I use Wegan pick, VERY heavy, that is why you hear some noise. I think the TI strings might augment the pick attack more than a brighter string does.

all the best,

Thanks for the replies. May pick up a set down the road and try on one of the mandolins. One thing I found is that what I like on the Eastman works out (tone wise) about the same on the RM75. I guess after a bit more experimentation I'll be able to say "these are the strings for me". Who knows, maybe someday you'll be string shopping and see on the pack "these are the ones Cutter uses"

Thanks Again & I'll let you know if & when
